So my mother had to drive my sister back to uni this afternoon (sister just came in for the weekend again). And they left pretty late which meant I was the one home this evening at six so I had to take care of the cats.

Let me back up because I haven't had time to mention this on my LJ yet. For the last few weeks we've noticed the litterboxes for kitties were being used a lot more. After a while we determined it was our Benji kitty (the black & white tuxedo one) who was to blame. Not only that, but he's been lying around more than usual, and seemed skinner. I finally got my mother to take him into the vet (she was just worried about him) and they drew some blood. We found out on Wednesday that he has Diabetes.

Since most of our cats are a little overweight (and one is more than a little) the vet has been wanting us not to always have food out for them. So since we found out about this, we have changed their schedule to: 1 scoop of dry food at 6am, 1 scoop of dry food at 6pm, and a few spoonfuls of moistfood at 10pm (which has always been moistfood time as well as the dog's bedtime). The cats have NOT been happy, but they're starting to understand. I think they'll learn to like it- animals like routine, and they've always been good about their 10pm feeding. So this will help us regulate them all, especially Benji.

I went to the vet with Mom (& Benji) after work on Wednesday where the two (three) of us got a crash course on Feline Diabetes and how to give him shots and all. So this is the 4th day we've been giving him Insulin once a day. I usually hold the cat while Mom gives him the shot. She's usually kind of nervous because she doesn't want to get it wrong or hurt him, which makes the cat nervous. And the first two days were just awful. But yesterday went really well and today she wasn't here so I had to do it all by myself with no one to hold him for me!!!

I gave him two treats to eat while it was happening, and he stayed put. Then a quick poke, a slight pull out to check for blood, then a push in and he was done! He didn't even seem to notice it (just like yesterday), just kept eating the treats. I checked to make sure it all went in, but his fur and skin weren't damp so I'm certain he was fine. Whoohoo! I'm so proud of myself. And proud of the Benji kitty, of course. He did awfully well. Pretty soon he'll love getting shots (that's the only time he gets his nummy treats, with the exception of when we have to give him antibiotic pills- he has an infected thing on his chin that's clearing up). Anyway, my first time doing it (other than at the vet's) and without any help and it went SOOOO smoothly!

I rock! :-)
