My 4 Pirate questions
Jun. 3rd, 2007 10:55 amMy two questions about things I didn't understand in PotC3 became three last night... and then 4 as I started typing them out. LOL
I'm cutting for spoilers...
1. Early on, Jack says something like "Why should I? Four of you have tried to kill me in the past. One of you succeeded." Who are the four? Elizabeth (who tried & then succeeded), Will, Barbosa, and...???? The monkey? LOL
2. WHY did they have to cut out Will's heart? I realize the Flying Dutchmen needs a captain. I realize that Will did the stabbing and had to take Davey Jones' place. However, apart from the sexy-sexy scar, I don't understand why he needed to have his heart cut out. And here's where that confusion comes from.
Point: Davey Jones is angry with Calypso. He was allowed only one day on land in 10 years. When he showed up, she was not there. He got pissed. He told the pirate lords how to bind her.
Point: When Davey & Calypso were argueing in the brig cell, he said that she betrayed him. She asked which betrayal it was after when he cut out his heart. So clearly he was ALREADY doing his duty, farrying souls to the locker BEFORE he cut out his heart. And he was already bound to the ship and under the '1 day in 10 years' rule BEFORE he cut out his heart.
So why wasn't Will bound the same way? Why'd he have to have it cut out and tossed into a chest?
3 & 4. Why can't Elizabeth see him out on the open seas? I realize she can't be there for the cool 'ship goes under water one place and pops up again somewhere completely different' part of it. Because she's mortal and all (then again, isn't Will's father also mortal now that he's been released? So how is he able to do that?? But, anyway, why isn't Elizabeth able to sail around and meet him out on the ship for a little while? As pirate king, she shouldn't have any trouble finding a ship, after all. I mean, Davey & Calypso were able to see each other and talk... so the curse/duty thing doesn't mean that they are unable to see each other... just that Will can't go on land for more than a day every ten years.

Because didn't Pintel and Ragetti participate in the mutiny that they thought was leaving Jack marooned on a deserted island with no food and no way to get any? Filmhobbit.com was also discussing this issue and came up with Will, Elizabeth, Barbossa, and Tia Dalma, because Jack comes over to her and says 'and as for you..' and she smiles and says "Don't tell me ya didn't enjoy it at the time." So, I'm guessing she's the 4th.
2. Will's heart especially bothers me, for exactly the reasons you listed. And more. Because Davy Jones buried his heart on land so he wouldn't have to feel the pain of his loss. It was only after Norrington and Beckett brought the heart back on the Dutchman that Jones started getting all weepy again, and he mentions he wants that 'infernal thing off my ship'. Therefore, wouldn't it follow that Will would become cold too, if separated from his heart? I HATE this idea, logical as it may be, so I'm not going to let myself believe it. Plus, if the curse is broken after 10 years of Liz being faithful to him like the writers say was cut for time, how the heck does the
heart get back into his chest?
3&4. Yeah, the first thing I thought of when they were staring at each other longingly from separate ships was 'Can't he just beam over like Davy Jones did?' My next thought was 'Will needs a bucket to stand in!'
The only possible answer I came up with is that he's got too much of a backlog of souls in the afterworld to deal with, cleaning up after decades of Jones neglecting his duty, to have much time off at all. But still, I see no reason why she can't see him at sea. Heck, she's ruthless enough to be Pirate King, I can see her capturing an enemy pirate and leaving him near dead so that she can see Will when he comes to claim the soul.
Barring that, I read a really cute fic where Jack and Bootstrap serve as post office workers, delivering letters between the lovers.
As for Bootstrap, I don't think he's mortal. He did pledge an eternity of servitude. I was under the impression that he was only free of Davy Jones's fishy curse of not doing duties, but not free of the Dutchman. Or possibly with a new Captain, he might be offered the choice again, to serve or to meet death. Either way, I don't think Bootstrap can go back to normal life ever.
For a summer popcorn movie, this fandom sure is getting complicated!

3. Again, drama. It makes it kind of bittersweet when they only get to see each other sometimes.
4. As far as Bootstrap.. well, Will hasn't spent much time with him and isn't he dead? Or is he alive? I'm confused on that point too, except that the father-son team works well.

3. The reason why she can't see him every once and awhile is because that would entail Will coming back into the world of the living and he's only allowed to do that once every ten years. The reason why the flying dutchman was constantly popping up in the mortal world throughout the movie was because Davy Jones was completely ignoring the rules. Hence the creepy composed of sea creatures look that he and his crew have.
hope that helps!

Date: 2007-06-10 09:14 pm (UTC)And honestly, I don't know half enough about the Flying Dutchman legend to answer the second question, honestly.
And I was asking myself the same thing about Elizabeth and Will. It would make sense that he could, seeing that Jones obviously had contact with mortals and all that.
(Funny thought, though, do you think they call it "Will Turner's Locker now?)
