Alapenutbuttersandwiches!
Jun. 8th, 2007 09:42 amSo... news from my 'hood...
*Our washing machine at home broke a few weeks ago (a couple days after I did a load). It's been a LONG almost two weeks- I even had to buy a new towel, underwear, and socks (cuz I don't feel like washing by hand in the upstairs bathtub). We're getting a new washer & dryer delivered today. Since my room is next to the laundry room, this meant needing to take down an entire bookcase and move half my room around so there was room to get the appliances in my door, across my room, and down the short hallway past my bathroom to the laundry room.
*I finally joined the ranks of the DVR-having! I decided a week or so ago that now that I make reasonable money, I should splurge for a DVR (like Tivo, only it goes through my existing cable company). It's only an extra $9.99 a month- I spend almost that much on video tapes every month, trying to record and keep up with shows. And now I'll be able to tape when I want or just record and delete without worrying if I have a blank tape available. I know, I'm the last person in the world to get one of these... but I'm always behind in technology. I'm very excited about this. Now I have no excuse for falling miserably behind on my shows.
*After a while not seeing her, the Mommy Robin was back and checking out her old nest a few days ago. Then she started staying there all the time. Which means... second brood of eggs & little babies! I'm going to put together a little diary this time, I think.
*Writers' Roundtable went well this last week. 10 people showed up- which is a huge turnout for us (usually we're at 5). I hadn't brought enough copies of my magazine, so I felt bad. But luckily I'd brought enough water & cookies.
*I'm almost done reading Eldest (sequel to Eragon). Does anyone know if there's any slash about in this series? I've done some searches- sort of got spoiled, then stopped doing searches. Feels a little spooky slashing a book that a teenager wrote... but Eragon's so cute- especially in book 2 when he's in pain the whole damn time *melts*. And there's so much potential with a few characters. I think the book series is a poor version of combining Lord of the Rings with the Dragonriders, with a little bit of Earthsea thrown in for good measure. But I still enjoy the characters and appreciate Chris' efforts. *wishes she could have had a published book and franchise at his age*
*Another Strokes Ace story popped into my head after Wed's Writers' Roundtable. And I still have massive amounts to write for the Sirius/Remus Fuh-Q-Fest. I am teh screwed.
*I set up my first PayPal shopping cart yesterday! It's here: http://www.unzippedart.com/ (see the purchase section) I'm pretty happy with it. They wanted simple, and it's definitely that. I think it might have made more sense to integrate it with the gallery... so we'll see. But it took a while to set up and I think it looks all right.
*I'm slowly making my way through Academy Award nominated films: http://listography.com/action/list?uid=6257205037&lid=8294885561
I'm skipping a couple that I just can't stomach (like Mel Gibson's film). But I'm going to try to watch 'em all!

Date: 2007-06-08 10:34 pm (UTC)Oohh goodie goodie- a lead! Good to know that it's out there somewhere (and that I'm not the only person thinking naughty thoughts about these boys).
The books aren't very creative- painfully familiar at times- but I do love the characters. And I LOVE the dragon. But I'm one of those awful people who sees good in just about any book or movie, even if most people think it's crap. I hope you find things to enjoy about it when you get to reading it! Thanks so much!

Date: 2007-06-08 04:23 pm (UTC)I saw Eragon in the theater and thought it mediocre at best. It didn't leave me wanting to seek out any fanfic, but if I were to bet, I'd say that Eragon is probably most likely to be slashed with Murtagh. In fact, I can't really think of any other good slashy options after the first book.
Oh, and congrats on the DVR! Yay! I think it'll really be a stress reliever for you not to have to worry 'Did I set my tape at the right place? Is the VCR on the right channel? What if I run out of room on the tape?' etc.
I'm currently Tivo-ing a reality show called 'Pirate Master'. It's definitely a poor man's 'Survivor', but I can't help but watch. 16 people crewing a real, functioning ship, climibing in the rigging, rowing ashore for treasure-hunting challenges, holding Pirates Court and handing out black spots, plotting mutinies, etc. The show is just mediocre, but it satisfies my post-POTC piratey cravings just a bit. Oh, and it helps that the island they're hunting for treasure on is the same one that Disney filmed a big chunk of Dead Man's Chest on...the Cannibal Island, I believe, and possibly a few other locales.

Date: 2007-06-08 10:32 pm (UTC)I accidentally spoiled myself for the biggest SW-like spoiler. I always forget SW parallels because I consider the first trilogy to be such a typical hero arc in and of itself. Just one of those cases of there only being, like, 7 or 8 stories that are retold over and over again in different ways. Kinda depressing. ANYWAY, yeah, I think the books aren't the least bit creative. Dwarf vs elf tension, dragon riders, big baddie that only the main character can defeat... yet, I adore the characters and to I keep reading (or keep listening, rather). I've got to say, there are parts of book 2 that make me like it more than book 1(especially when Eragon is hurt and keeps passing out from the pain- yuuuum)... although I did like book 1 better for other reasons.

I made a point to read the book before seeing the movie. I liked the book, as I said. But I didn't really like the movie. They simplified sooooooo much and cut out tons of details. The voices were all wrong because I'm so used to listening to the audio books (there's something about the way the guy does Saphira's voice that gets to me, especially when she calls Eragon 'Little One' awwww!) I have the first book and I've flipped through it and looked at the maps and all. I don't think I would have enjoyed the story half as much without the characters' voices in the audio book version.

Apart from Saphira, Murtagh is actually my very favorite character. I looooooove him. Murtagh/Eragon was definitely what I had in mind. However, we find out in book 2 that back in their training days, Brom practically glued himself to Morzan's side, worshiping the guy. So they would have a perfect Obi-Wan & Xanatos relationship if Obi & Xan had been padawans of Qui's at closer to the same time. Lots of chemistry and tons of angst regarding good vs. evil. Nummy stuff.
Oh, I definitely agree about the DVR. I'm SURE it will save me a lot of piece of mind. Especially since we have cable boxes here and so if I wanted to tape, I had to set the channel in the box and then set the VCR to record on chan.3. So if I had two things to tape in a night on two different channels, I had to choose one or the other.
As for Pirate Master- you know me- I watch sooooooo many shows. Of course I'm following Pirate Master! Haven't missed an episode. (Which, you know, doesn't say much since there's only been 2, LOL). I'd personally call it a LOT worse than just 'mediocre', but it's great for a laugh (especially when the people over-act) and a pirate fix. I'd LOVE to be the one to set up those puzzles/traps/hunts.

Date: 2007-06-09 02:42 am (UTC)The problem with writing anything before 10am is that I'm still partially asleep. It should probably be alapeanutbutterandjellysandwiches, shouldn't it? Oops.
Ah well. I'm glad it brought a smile to your face and memories to your... um... mind? Apparently I'm no better at 10pm ;-)
