Look, it's meeeeeeeee!
Oct. 5th, 2007 08:42 pmSorry I haven't been around a lot. This was a BUSY two weeks... and it hasn't let up yet!
Fall for the Book Festival- KICKASS! Rita Mae Brown- strange but hilarious and awesome. Christ Baty of NaNoWriMo fame- INCREDIBLY cool. He gave out free posters to the first people there and he autographed mine to me (I forgot to bring my book... but he was cool and didn't make me buy another). His talk was SO inspiring. And afterwards I got invterviewed about the session by a journalism student. But, yeah, I can't wait until Nov now! Bring on the novel!
NaNoWriMo- speaking of which, I still haven't made a decision about what to write... but I'm leaning towards this new idea I just came up with instead of the idea I've been throwing around for a year now. I'm nervous about picking the wrong one and being stuck all month. But either way I'll give it a good shot.
National Book Festival- the festival was SO cool. Why didn't I get my butt out of bed and go last year? Soooooooooooo awesome. I heard/saw: Susan Vreeland (I've been dying to read Luncheon of the Boating Party and as I wandered into the sales tent they were just putting out copies of her book- signed by the author! I bought one and avoided standing in lines *G*), Lalita Tademy, Terry Pratchett (who ROCKED!!), and Joyce Carol Oates. I had a nice lunch on the grass by the carosel and the 'vegetarian fare' stand. I visited the graffiti wall at the Library of Congress tent. I walked by the PBS characters tent but it was a mob scene and I didn't get a glimpse at Mr. McFeely (Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood).
Then I met up with BookCrossers in front of the Natural History Museum and that was great. I spent the rest of the day with them- handing out free books to passers-by and just talking/having fun. I met a few BookCrossers I knew online and had never met before so that was especially neat.

BookCrossing- I got an article published in the BookCrossing Newsletter yesterday. AND further down on the newsletter the best/latest wild release catch section features my latest catch as the very first one! So I was in the newsletter TWICE! How neat-o!! I feel so special :-)

Capitals Pre-Season Game- Then I got to go to a Capitals pre-season game on Sunday! We got tickets out of the blue and the seats were 12 or 13 rows back from the ice. Sooooooooo much better than the "Eagle's Nest" seats on the third floor. heehee I also took the opportunity to buy a Capitals jersey. I've never had one before and now that we have the snazzy new uniforms, I decided it was time. I chose white, which is away color but which I like better (assuming I don't spill stuff on it, it will last me a long time). We lost the game, 2 to 1 but we outshot them by more than double and the goal scored (by Koslov of the awesome neon yellow-green hockey stick) was right in front of us. Sooooooo exciting. The Capitals are going to have a GOOD season this year, I can feel it!
Board Meeting- Yesterday our board of directors came into town. That's always a bit stressful but they're such a great group of people so it's fun, too. We had dinner last night and a board meeting today. I had to be up EARLY to get the mics set up to record. And I had to give my part about the website. I got a few laughs and a lot of applause for my work. So yay- it's nice to be appreciated by the board.
Faerie Con- I'm really excited about this. Turns out a new friend will probably be able to go as well, so we may share a room/transportation. It'll be AWESOME going to the convention at all. But it'll be even better experiencing it with someone else, too *G*
AIDS Walk- the AIDS walk is tomorrow! I'm setting my alarm clock for 5:30am and really hoping my stomach behave itself in the morning. It was awful this morning- I almost had to pull over/call ahead sick. But I recovered and I'm hoping tomorrow will be similar. I've been assigned "route" as a volunteer. I haven't worked the route since I was a senior in high school! So I'm kind of excited about that. I think I might go out and buy new sunscreen tonight after the Capitals game.......
Hockey- speaking of which- HOCKEY IS BACK! SQUEEEE!

Date: 2007-10-06 03:38 am (UTC)1st idea: typical love triangle gay paranormal romance novel. Main characters: after almost a year, I STILL haven't come up with names! One is a vampire (with a few small twists from the typical vampire myths) and the other is a male succubus who feeds off sexual desire. They're partners in every sense of the word. They team up to kill- the succubus lures in attractive young men who need their sexual desires fulfilled and, after feeding on that and making love to them, the vampire kills them. Even though they're both a bit different/quirky it works well and they like coming home to each other. Except that the vampire still has a tie to humanity and falls in love with someone else. There's a whole part about his trying to cover up the affair, and then debate about whether or not to turn his new love into a vampire, too. Nothing really all that spectacular, but it would allow me to write a lot of hot gay sex and play with some darker themes (and hopefully develop some subplots I've had flashes of). Lots of potential for angst and some h/c as well if it comes out the way I have it planned out.
Problem: After a year of thinking, I still don't have character names or settings or much more of a complicated plot. Obviously the latter might come out once I started writing, and I very rarely plan things out ahead of time anyway so I'm not worried.
2nd idea: The idea for this came from a prompt... oh, I'll just let this post explain that whole story: http://mymightypen.livejournal.com/13053.html
The concept is a young girl who steps through a doorway that takes her to other points in her life. There are a bunch of rules I'm making up about how the time traveling actually works and it's kind of got a Quantum Leap/Journeyman element to it because I'm a HUGE fan of volunteering and caring for others so the way back to her own time is most probably to do something good for someone else. Anyway, there are a whole bunch of rules she learns later from an old woman in the town who has time traveled the same way. And it seems like a neat thing, until she jumps ahead and experiences her own untimely death. So the story follows her life as she learns more about her future and tries to avoid her death. There are a few small twists I've already worked out (like a magical amulet of some unknown origin) but the story is largely set in current day real world. I've already developed the girl in my attempt at writing a Graphic Novel about the story, as well as plotlines involving her family and a friend or two. In fact, I already know how I think it will end and I'd like to explore all the details in the story (I have a lot mapped out but there's a ton of room to play around still). Basically, it's an idea best suiting a novel and I REALLY REALLY want to write it. I LOVE time travel and it's so rare that I get such a detailed original story popping into my head. I worry that if I put off writing it, it will never get written and I'll regret that. Because I want to read it, once it's written!
Problem: Um, no gay characters or gay sex. Angst but girl!angst and little-to-no h/c as I like to write it. So I'm worried that if my enthusiasm for the idea fades, I'll never get it back. Plus I feel sorry for the un-named characters of idea 1 who I've spent a year thinking about and will abandon for another year or more if I go with idea #2.
*sigh* I dunno. I think that if I really put in the effort, I could pull off 50,000 words with either. The first would be easier to write in some ways, and harder in others (the characters REFUSE to tell me things!!!!). The second is of a much higher quality and I really want to give it a try, but might prove to be a LOT harder in most ways for me to stick with and write.
I'm leaning heavily towards story 2 right now to the point where I'd consider taking an entire month (a not November month) to try to write it on my own. But it would be more convenient if I just wrote it now for NaNoWriMo, obviously.

Date: 2007-10-06 03:48 am (UTC)I like #1 b/c of the slash and the h/c and it would be cool to see what you could do with a darker plot. I don't want this to sound odd/off, but sometimes dealing with dark plots can be a nice change of pace and a good way to stretch you mind and write from a far different perspective.
Either way you go, I know it will be wonderful... like everything you do! I think the ultimate decision needs to be what you want to accomplish out of the month. Do you want to have a complete story you could be happy with or do you want to use it as the jump-off point for a longer more in-depth story?
