Down with Love
May. 16th, 2003 06:49 pmInteresting experience, going to the movies alone. My first time, it was. Apart from getting caught in a downpour driving over, and spilling soda on myself twice- damn top wasn't closed- it was a fun experience. I got to sit in the middle (instead of in the last two rows which is where boyfriend always wants to sit for some bloody stupid reason) and there were only 8 other people (including another woman alone) Many women bringing boyfriends- I know mine would not have enjoyed it.
OK, the movie. And I promise, no spoilers! I LOVED it!!! Movie credits have Ewan and Renee singing! That was inexpected for me- I hadn't anticipated the singing- the ending credits have a music video-type and a little bit to wrap up the plot, so make sure you stick around when the credits start to roll.
The movie was WONDERFUL! Revolving around a book and writing- always a sure bet to get me interested :-) The love story vs. self-made woman themes were set in the 60's which I thought was chosen beautifully, amidst the housewives leave the house revolution and the pill and all that. The sets were nice, and the clothing extravagent and adorable.
But most importantly, the acting was fabulous! David Hyde Pierce and Sarah whatever-her-last-name-is-I'm-too-lazy-to-look-it-up were terrific supporting actors, really making Ewan and Renee's performances possible. David was just adorable *wants to hug him* But Ewan was FANTASTIC!! He was charming, funny, sexy and brilliant all in one. And Renee was even better! :-) Her acting was very Bridget Jonesy, which is fine by me as I loved that movie. The plot was clever, with enough unseen twists that I personally thought were believable enough in the context of the film.
It had a very surreal feel to it- an over-exaggerated piece which made for good comedy. The script could have been a little better in places, I thought, but in other places it was brilliant :-) Lots of silly sex jokes (one of them visual and creative, but terribly silly) that were kind of cute and funny (A TON more sex jokes than I would have thought for a PG movie) And the ideas of career and love and marriage while being a woman in a man's world were really well portrayed- no quick and easy answers that apply to all women- I thought that message was done very well. Oh, and nice emphasis both on what women want and need as well as what men want and need. That was cute.
It was VERY entertaining and I really enjoyed it. Especially Ewan. His fake southern accent was HILARIOUS! And there's one part (it's in one of the trailers) where he takes her eyelash and tells her to make a wish- in his regular accent- and he sounds JUST like when he says "Make a wish" in Velvet Goldmine that he had me absolutely melting. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! Fantastic movie. Too cute. Definately entertaining. Good for laughs and for non romantic types as well as romantic ones. I liked. It was just what I needed.
On another note... there was a preview for a movie called Alex & Emma or... Emma & Alex... I don't remember. Anyway, Alex is a writer and Emma a typist he's giving dictation to. Romance story, and she (Kate Hudson) plays the roles of all the woman in the story. Very much my thing. I thought it looked really good. The kind of thing I might find myself writing. Story within a story type. And cute :-) Anyway, look out for it too.
*sigh* Ewan singing... and winking... oh he is just WAY too fricking cute for his own good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *sigh*

Date: 2003-05-16 04:21 pm (UTC)There's a scene where they're both getting dressed (separately) and showing sexy images of Renee- I'd bet they put that in just for the guys who got dragged to see it by their girlfields.
It's really, really cute though :-) And Ewan *swoon* He even types on a typewriter just like the one in Moulin Rouge... deja vous...

Going to the movies alone (LONG POST)
Date: 2003-05-16 06:02 pm (UTC)I'm no stranger to going to the movies by myself. I don't have a huge group of friends I usually hang out with, just a few really close friends scattered across several states that I don't get to see nearly as often as I would like. So sometimes, if I want to see a movie, I just go when it's convenient for me. It's nice that way...I get to sit though all the credits to the end the way I like to, without having someone else there itching to leave as soon as the lights come up.
And actually, going alone to certain movies can actually work well as a way to meet people. I saw LOTR: FOTR by myself my 4th through 7th viewings. I went alone for my 8th viewing on the day that they attached the trailer at the end for TTT, dressed up in my usual Tolkien-geek fashion (black FOTR t-shirt, One Ring around my neck, and long straight blond hair braided to imitate a certain sexy elf *G*). However, on this day, as I was heading to my seat, a girl a few years older than me noticed my outfit and hair and commented on it. She was there with her husband, who puts up with her LOTR and SW habits better than a lot of men would! She had driven 45 minutes to see the TTT trailer in that theater as it had left her hometown already.
Anyway, we struck up a conversation and it turned out we had a TON of things in common: the same websites, favorite fics, our lust for Obi-Wan and Legolas, etc. We chatted until the movie started, exchanged smiles at our favorite Legolas parts onscreen, and both squealed with excitement as the TTT preview played. Afterwards, we swapped e-mails, and I later saw my 9th and 10th viewings with her. We're great friends now, and saw TTT together at a midnight showing opening night, and saw it together another 8 or so total times. We saw Matrix: Reloaded together the night before it opened officially, we plan to see POTC together, and eagerly swap spoilers for ROTK. So it pays to go to the movies alone sometimes!!

Date: 2003-05-16 07:09 pm (UTC)And I am much impressed- how was Reloaded? I've heard less philosophy and more fighting, but really good just the same. It took me 2 years to get my boyfriend to watch the first Matrix movie so I've not even bothered holding my breath for this one LOL
sounds great!
Date: 2003-05-16 08:23 pm (UTC)I'm glad that it was good. Now I am Super, Super tempteded to go and see it in the theater *either alone or with a female friend*.
Oooo! When you mentioned Bridget Jone's Diary- it just made me wonder if they are Ever going to make the second book into a movie I am SOOO hoping as Mark is even More adorable *if possible* in the second book than in the first. Sorry for tangent.
*cheers you for going it alone* Besides- I figure that it is better sometimes to go it alone than drag an unwilling s/o in with you. (At least that is the case for me ;) )
