May. 4th, 2008 06:35 pmAnother book sale... This one's Friday's haul, but I'm just getting to unpacking the box I put them in, because yesterday was sooo busy (I went to work all day on a Saturday and battled a server)

Date: 2008-05-05 02:10 pm (UTC)If you're serious about taking requests, any chance you can set the Shannara book aside for me? I have no idea where it falls in the order of that book series, but I plan on working through them eventually.

Date: 2008-05-05 02:51 pm (UTC)I'll definitely set aside the Shannara books for you. No problemo. Which have you got already?
As for Shadow of the Wind *happy sigh* It's not the sort of book I typically like. It's set in Spain and it's a bit gothic in flavor. But I was so incredibly spell-bound by it. I think it found its way on my wish list because it's got a gay character in it (recommended to me by a fellow BookCrosser) and someone had an audio version of the book so contacted me to include me in a bookring. The book fell into my lap and though I wasn't sure I was going to dig it, I fell in love so quickly!
The basic plot revolves around a young boy whose father takes him to the Library of Forgotten Books. He's allowed to take one book home to read & protect and he chooses 'Shadow of the Wind' by an obscure author. The book captivates and transforms him and he becomes interested in finding out what other books the author wrote and what happened to the author. It turns out that it's nearly impossible to find other books because someone went around burning every copy in existence (revenge?). And it turns out the author was murdered suddenly many years ago. Or was he? A few people still alive had dealings with him/relationships with him/knowledge of him and the boy slowly investigates, trying to put the pieces together so that the author can rest in peace. However, he gets wrapped up in a WHOLE LOT more than he'd planned. There's a kindly fix-it guy, a teasing beautiful blind girl, a homeless man with a name like a bull fighter, a mysterious lawyer who exists only as a PO Box, a single father who runs a bookshop, a friggin INSANE police officer who scared me to death, a forbidden love (or maybe more than one!), an abandoned house that holds the key to it all, and a very special pen once rumored to have belonged to Victor Hugo himself! Apart from plot and really colorful characters, the writing (at least, the translation- I don't know Spanish so I didn't read the original) is absolutely gorgeous. It's beautifully written- some of the phrases/metaphors used really jumped out at me.
The Wikipedia plot summary gives away one of the more obvious twists (without a SPOILER ALERT!) but the page for the particular book I read through BookCrossing is spoiler-free: http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/5079475
