Torchwood returns

Julie Gardner has confirmed that a third series of Torchwood has been commissioned and that it will be unlike anything we have seen before!

Not only will the series air on BBC One, Torchwood will have a brand new format. The series will consist of just one continuous story, delivered over 5 consecutive nights.

That's not the only thing that will be new about the series - Torchwood will have a brand new producer, Peter Bennett, who has previously worked on Torchwood and on Doctor Who as well as 'The Mummy', 'A View to a Kill' and 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'. Euros Lyn will also join the team as Director. Euros has directed several Doctor Who episodes including the 'Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead' two-part story from the current series.

And just to add to the excitement, the show will boast some new arrivals in the cast as well...

Julie Gardner says that she and Russell T Davies "are thrilled to be bringing Torchwood back for a third series. The new series promises to be a gripping and surprising TV event and we're certain the audience will love the team's exciting, roller-coaster adventures."

I'm glad they finally confirmed all the rumors that have been floating around for the last month or two. Now I can stop speculating and start coming to terms with a short series 3 with only one storyline.

I'm very nervous. Torchwood doesn't have the greatest track record with 'epic' stories spread over more than one ep. The whole Gray thing was mishandled big time, to the point where by the end of 'Exit Wounds' I couldn't care less what happened to him. I liked the end of series 1 much more, but even that was kinda bordering on farfetched and silly at times. (Abbaddon..yeah, a giant bulldog face is so not scary, but thanks for playing!) In fact, now that I think about it, there seems to be a pattern. Second to last ep of a season being seriously awesome, and then just not quite reaching the full potential of the storyline in the finale.

I'm also terrified that this format won't allow for the characters to grow and develop further, and have lots of cute interactions that tend to fall to the wayside in big 'event movie' type things. I've always had a preference for stand-alone character-building episodes. Countrycide, They Keep Killing Suzie, To The Last Man, Meat, Adam...those are the ones that have the little moments I love so much.

I'm still hopeful though. If this works, I think it'll be really awesome, and a great way to transition from the trauma of 'Exit Wounds' and the drama that will probably go down at the end of Doctor Who this series, and get ready to start a full series 4 like Barrowman's already been hinting at. I particularly think it'll be a great way to show Jack, Gwen, and Ianto dealing with issues on their own and then picking up new teammates so we're set to hit the ground running on series 4. *crosses fingers*

Also, now that it's 100% certain, I'm hoping against hope that GDL doesn't have to pull out of Dragon*Con the last weekend in August. If he does, I may just have to follow him to Cardiff and try and do some filming spotting this fall...
