Alphabet meme
Jan. 6th, 2009 12:59 amOkay, so the brilliant
shadowscast wrote an even more amazing alphabet in Gorey-style, set in the Buffyverse.
It's totally a meme now, only my attempt isn't anything as good as hers.
Meme: Select a fandom. For each letter of the alphabet, list a character who dies and how he/she dies in the rhyming style of Edward Gorey.
I made two attempts, one serious and one that's supposed to be funny.
Serious Attempt:
A Highlander-verse Alphabet (in the style of Edward Gorey's GashlycrumbTinies):
A is for Ashe, who begged not to die
B is for Burns, to help dark!Duncan he did try
C is for Charlie, stabbed after a search
D is for Darius, killed in his church
E is for Ellenstein, in the bombed antique store
F is for Fitzcairn, though he was brought back for more
G is for Grayson, at the sulfur pit, a close call
H is for Horton, run through once and for all
I is for Ingrid, targeting evil men on her list
J is for Joe, in a movie that shouldn’t exist
K’s for all the K-immies, from sword or from pistol
L is for Luther, who died over the crystal
M is for Mikey, thanks to a train rail
N is for Nicholas, the vamp had Mac on his trail
O’s for the Other Methos, peace couldn’t save him
P is for Piton, who killed models on a whim
Q is for Quenten, whose death took out Moore
R is for Richie, whom Ahriman used as a lure
S is for Silas, a horseman brutal but funny
T is for Tessa, shot dead over money
U is for Ursa, who fell from a spire
V is for Vashti, burned alive on a pyre
W is for Walker, mad at who he found in his bed
X is for Xavier, who lost his hand then his head
Y’s for Young Kenny, whose death we expected
Z is for Zale, who Mac should have protected
Comments: Okay, so I had to stretch a few to get them to fit. The problem with Highlander is that SO many baddies' names start with K! I came up with different versions of some of these, but kept editing until I found better ones. And my biggest problem in writing was I kept describing the CHARACTER instead of the DEATH as I was supposed to be doing. I ended up describing the circumstances for the death in a lot of cases, which I think counts.
Another problem with using Highlander for this is that all the immortals basically die the same way: they're beheaded. And when I mentioned to my mother what I was writing, we joked about that and I just couldn't resist writing a funny version based on that...
Funny Attempt:
A Highlander-verse Alphabet (in the style of Edward Gorey's GashlycrumbTinies):
A is for Andrew, whom Duncan beheaded
B is for Byron, whom Duncan beheaded
C is for Cord, whom Duncan beheaded
D is for Dallman, whom Duncan beheaded
E is for Everett, whom Duncan beheaded
F is for Felicia, whom Duncan beheaded
G is for Garrick, whom Duncan beheaded
H is for Howard, whom Duncan beheaded
I is for Ingrid, whom Duncan beheaded
J is for Johnny K, whom Duncan beheaded
K is for Kronos, whom Duncan beheaded
L is for Larca, whom Duncan beheaded
M is for Martin, whom Duncan beheaded
N is for Nefertiri, whom Duncan beheaded
O is for O’Rourke, whom Duncan beheaded
P is for Peter, whom Duncan beheaded
Q is for Quince, whom Duncan beheaded
R is for Reinhardt, whom Duncan beheaded
S is for Sullivan, whom Duncan beheaded
T is for Thorne, whom Duncan beheaded
U is for an unnamed immortal, whom Duncan beheaded
V is for Voshin, whom Duncan beheaded
W is for Whittaker, whom Duncan beheaded
X is for Xavier, whom Duncan beheaded
Y is for Young Kenny, whom Duncan beheaded
Z is for Zachary, whom Duncan fought… but Amanda beheaded
Comments: I really wanted to choose different people for this one than the first, and I managed that in all but 3. I could have re-written the first to choose a different I (one Richie beheads) but I love Ingrid and wanted her in the good version.

Date: 2009-01-06 02:49 pm (UTC)Now, sadly, I've never seen a single episode of Highlander (despite having a special affinity for Duncan, being of the clan MacLeod myself!)—so I can't fully appreciate your achievement here. But it looks quite good to me!
And my biggest problem in writing was I kept describing the CHARACTER instead of the DEATH as I was supposed to be doing. I ended up describing the circumstances for the death in a lot of cases, which I think counts.
Oh man, yeah, I had the same problem. And describing the circumstances of the death totally counts, I would say—the point is to evoke the death scene in the minds of your readers, yes? :-)
So, hey, well done! Okay if I link here from the body of my original post?

Date: 2009-01-07 05:40 am (UTC)Yes, the second version was lots of fun (except for there still being no Highlander character whose name starts with Y! I'm tempted to try Star Wars because I *know* there's a Y in that one. LOL!). Though it occurs to me that in the second version the character I used for 'V' was actually beheaded by the propeller of his ship during his fight with Duncan. But Duncan was about to behead him, so it's close enough (he was a very bad man, selling out to Stalin and sending nice people to their deaths for a little profit).

I'm SO glad you had the same problem! And, hey, it's your meme so I bow to your wisdom in this matter. heehee
And you're most welcome to link to this post!
