I was just pointed to this from one of the DW kink_bingo mods through my flist...might want to read it before you take the survey or, if it's too late for that, reconsider your answers.

Yes, please don't take this and don't advertise it for them. These people have shoddy scientific methods (failing to get informed consent, taking detailed sexual and drug use information from minors (they claim they are not collecting data from minors but the study never says for only those over 18 to take it, not to mention issues of consent in other countries as this is an international-access survey), changing survey questions while the survey is ongoing and thereby invalidating all previous data). The questions also display dangerous preconceived notions about race, gender, heteronormative sexuality, feminism, etc. And a total lack of understanding about fandom in general and an appalling lack of preparatory research done, and condescending answers to those that question their methods (i.e. Straight men actually write slash? Slash isn't just two heterosexual males having sex? People actually write novel-length fanfictions, and are they doing so with the anticipation of maybe hopefully getting them published someday?, as though that's the only reason one might bother writing longer fic. ARGH!) ***Edited to add that these aren't quotes of their answers, just summaries of things about fanfiction that seemed to come as total surprises to them. Though they did indeed ask the person that writes novels if they did so with the hope of being published, and when said person said he/she just wrote fic for fun and, in fact was already published, they were immediately 'Oh, how wonderful for you!'and fawning about being published, again, as though being published was a superior goal to aspire to than writing fanfiction for enjoyment.***

Not to mention that they already have a book deal and a release date for their book, and are likely just fishing for data that they can cherry pick to support pre-established conclusions. The book is called 'Rule 34: What Netporn Teaches Us About the Brain' and I wish I were joking about that...

The entire wankstorm is being chronicled here: http://linkspam.dreamwidth.org/5800.html

Ok, now I have to laugh at how fandom is messing with these guys in retaliation.

One person answered the survey as a 100-year old asexual female Ood. Apparently other TW fandom members were planning on answering as a 51st century Time Agent with a fascination for poodles. LOL!
