I thought long and hard about this one, trying to figure out how I might go about placing Hornblower in this most unfortunate of situations. I hope you approve of the way it played out! Have a wonderful rest of the year... and lots of wonderful moments to come in the new one!

Date: 2011-12-27 08:16 am (UTC)This was great! When the bunny first popped into my head, I had no idea how to execute it. You came up with an awesome way for it to happen, and I loved it.
I loved Horatio's curiosity; it made him seem much less stiff and surprisingly playful. And the sneezes were glorious, of course. Why oh why couldn't they have gotten to "Atropos" in the miniseries? I guess I'll just have to rely on your fantastic sneezefics instead.
(Can I also add how happy I am that you threw in a snuff reference? Because seriously, that stuff is like fetishist's GOLD.)
Long story short, this was wonderful. I am going to read this (and the one you're doing later for myownprivatesfc) as inspiration for the Sneezefic challenge.

One can hardly expect to be a knowledgeable captain without experiencing firsthand all that makes up a voyage. And, to be honest, I think for a while there he doubted that Bush & the Midshipman were correct... or that maybe he was just immune to it. But, no, in the end it got to him like it would have to anyone else.
I soooo agree about Atropos! I listened to the sneezing moments of the audio versions of the books so many times I could recite them by heart, practically. I like to pause it just after the "Then he sneezed three times running." line and just GRIN.
(Can I also add how happy I am that you threw in a snuff reference? Because seriously, that stuff is like fetishist's GOLD.)
I sort of have a thing for snuff sneezes... I don't understand why it isn't used more in sneezefics. Well, I guess I do, because so few stories are set when snuff is used. BUT STILL, the stuff really is awesome. Socially acceptable sneezing, carried around in your pocket. Clearly I was born in the wrong era.
Thanks again for the great & reassuring comments. I'm glad you liked it so much!

Date: 2011-12-28 10:49 am (UTC)Lucky! I got Ioan's reading of the book (abridged, tragically), and was so nervous about that part that I had someone preview it for me. Apparently they CUT THAT PART OUT. I haven't been brave enough to find out for sure, though, so maybe I should give it a shot and find out for sure.
"Clearly I was born in the wrong era."
Oh, it's SO much better than just snuff. Remember, they wrote with quill pens too, and regularly dusted their hair with fine powders that probably would set off a sensitive nose or two (which is part of the reason I chose my username). So yes, we were TOTALLY born 200 years too late.
