So I went to a local geek group's discussion today because it was on Supernatural. My friend's a member of the group and suggested I go. People to talk SPN with IRL? Yes please!

I wasn't disappointed exactly, but it was not the sort of fangirling I like to do. The discussion was quiet, organized, nice. There was lots of comparing it to X-Files. There was lots of dead silence time. There were a few people who'd seen all of the show or at least more than the 10 episodes from season 1 that were recommended to us. But there wasn't a lot of in-depth analysis of any sort and there were a number of people (including my friend) who just didn't like the show. I have a friend who got night terrors after seeing the first episode, waking up screaming about women on the ceiling on fire. So I know there are people out there who can't handle the show. My other friend says it's too scary and just no characters she liked (everyone's too pretty). Huh. I've never had that complaint. LOL But, yeah, surface level discussion. It wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't rock my world either. The geeks were nice people--lots of different fandom references; we even had a Doctor Who photo op with black cubes (I took one home and I plan to throw it away before the year is up just in case it decides to invade). But at one point my friend leans over and says to me "I think you've found your people!" I smiled and nodded. They were nice people, but the level of excitement about any fandom we discussed was almost in the negative numbers. I have never before met such a calm group of fans. Super strange. Like someone grabbed a bunch of people from Comicon, put them on downers, and asked them boring questions. Group Leader: "What do you think of John Winchester." Answer from the group: complete silence. Me: "I think he did the best he could. He wasn't perfect, but he had a hard lot in life." Someone else: "At least he taught his kids something. They know cars." Another someone else: "Well, he taught Dean about cars. Not so much Sam." More silence. Group leader moves on to next question. Seriously. I'm so very shy around people I don't know but all these people knew each other--some where married or living together. Gah. TALK. TALK LIKE FANS! We get into livelier side discussions about SPN at my Harry Potter meetup groups that aren't even supposed to be ABOUT SPN! LOL

Plus, some of my comments/jokes totally went over their heads. I brought a huge bag of peanut M&Ms. And they like "Oh, nice. Food goes over there." I mean COME ON. Windego was one of the required episodes to watch. Peanut M&Ms people! But, no. And at the beginning the guy in charge set out a bunch of books and movies they'd already covered in previous discussions and asked us who would be our idea hunting partner out of all of the characters in the fandoms. I wanted to choose the human torch (how convenient would that be?) but they hadn't done anything in the Marvel-verse. Watchmen was one of the things they covered and I made a joke about the Comedian, because he just looks like a hunter. Complete silence followed and I mumbled something like "same actor... okay, fine. I'll go with Batman too." Which I think gave me no points at all in creativity because someone had already chosen him (but, seriously, he was a better choice than Captain Hammer. What the hell is Captain Hammer going to do against a leviathan? Share hair care secrets? Sing showtunes with Lucifer? Please.). But you get it right? Jeffrey Dean Morgan? The Comedian? John Winchester? *sigh* Clearly I need to just stick with the right groups of online fans. I love you guys. Come fangirl with me?

We played board games after the discussion. First was a picture game with weird scoring but very pretty pictures. Then there was a trivia game and I couldn't answer any of the questions (apart from the one about the Bronte sisters and the occasional answer here and there). What kind of a geek can name 7 over the counter make-up companies? And then a damn Survivor question comes up and it's me asking the question so I can't answer it. GAH! I've never missed a single episode of that show! But ask me to name the top five major marketing firms in number of employees and I have no idea what that's even asking. I actually started to get things wrong on purpose just to make the game end faster. I felt like a complete idiot. LOL! But then we played Cards Against Humanity, and that's always fun. I didn't win, but I came out with 5 cards. Not too bad.

I think I might skip Ren Faire tomorrow. I'm still getting over this cold (it's mostly gone, but I'm still insanely tired) and I just don't feel like driving all that way, navigating around highways that are closed, and going to the same things I went to last year and the year before and not being able to eat much because I'm trying to change my diet (phasing out all the food I've already bought and phasing in freshly purchased produce). I didn't go to my Writer's Roundtable group on Wednesday because I was sick. And I'm skipping this month's discussion of A Casual Vacancy to be held next weekend because I haven't bought let alone read the book yet. That's three meetings I've ditched in a month. That's SO not like me. And doing this kind of thing is one of my warning signs of depression (just stay at home and sleep all the time). But I've been working hard and I've been sick and, damn it, I'm allowed a day to myself every so often when I'm not in misery, right? Maybe I'll go work on my house tomorrow too :-)

I'm sorry it wasn't the experience you were expecting. And what sort of serious fans don't get the jokes, especially the MnM's one? But at least you managed to make the most of it.

Also, on a slightly off topic note, do you think you could tag the fandoms on your H/C ABC fics? It would make specific fics much easier to find.

Thank you! And don't apologize, you probably got distracted. These things happen all the time. Besides, you had quite a few fandoms to work with. No surprise it slipped your mind.
