2. A Before
Dean wakes in the middle of the night to the familiar sound of the springs of Sam’s bed, groaning under the younger Winchester boy’s weight. The apartment only has one bedroom; Dad sleeps out on the couch and Dean and Sam share, but at least they have their own beds on opposite sides of the room.
Sitting up, Dean can see Sam’s awake. And from the nightlight between the beds, Dean can see tears running down the sides of Sam’s face. “Sammy?” his voice is sleepy even as he rubs his eyes. “You all right?”
Sam sniffles, shakes his head.
“Is it your legs again?”
Sam nods, another tear sliding down his face against the side of his nose.
Resignedly, Dean pulls himself out of bed. He mumbles something about the hot water bottle and heads to the bathroom. He fumbles around in the cabinet under the sink, but he can’t find the hot water bottle. He checks the medicine cabinet, but that’s stupid; it’s too big to be there. He checks the under-the-sink cabinet again, checking between the towels and behind the bleach. He returns to the bedroom and starts a search there. He checks under Sam’s bed, in Sam’s bed, in the gap between the wall and Sam’s bed. But the only thing there is Sam. “Can’t find the hot water bottle,” Dean says.
Sam’s restrained sob breaks Dean’s heart. Dean sits on the edge of Sam’s bed. “It’s just growing pains, Sammy.”
“I know. But they still ache so much.”
Dean puts a hand on Sam’s thigh through the blanket and starts rubbing. After a minute, Sam’s tears cease. With his free hand, Dean wipes Sam’s face dry with the corner of the blanket. The swifter Dean rubs, the calmer Sam gets. The rubbing makes them warm, not as much as the hot water bottle would have, but enough to help. By the time it’s evolved to rubbing both hands up and down Sam’s legs, his brother is nearly asleep.
A geometry test in school the next morning means Dean should get back into bed and go to sleep. But he doesn’t stop rubbing yet. And he doesn’t get back into bed. He sits up against the wall, his legs draped over Sam’s to keep them warm.
