11. An After
Sam pushes the button on the hospital bed to raise the back up a bit. His roommate is finally asleep, which means Sam can watch his television at a low volume. He isn’t particularly excited about whatever shows are on, he just knows that if he loses himself in some stupid sitcom or talk show or soap opera drama, the time will pass more quickly and maybe the awareness of the pain will fade a bit too. He flips through the limited selection of channels, attempting to determine the least objectionable option.
The good news is that Dean isn’t here. Sam loves him, but Dean’s got the worst taste in television shows lately. And the very last thing Sam needs as he lies there recuperating in a hospital bed is a very special episode of Dr. Sexy M.D.
And the bad news is that Dean isn’t here. Sam can’t get comfortable in the stiff hospital bed with its rough sheets that have been through the wash too many times. He’s got an IV in his arm so his range of motion is limited to mainly whatever positions require lying on his back. The pillows are stiff, with no give at all, so there’s a pain in his neck he tries to do away with by adjusting the bed. He’s too cold, lying beneath a sheet and light blanket, wearing only a hospital gown.
He’d gotten virtually no sleep last night, with his roommate moaning for more morphine all night and with people coming in to take his vitals every few hours. But visiting hours are starting any moment now and he wants to be awake when Dean arrives.
“Sammy?”
Sam sighs with relief and tries to smile at Dean, who hovers by the curtain dividing the room. “How are you feeling?”
“Mmm,” Sam replies. With his jaw wired shut, he can manage bits of words fine, but around Dean, he doesn’t really have to use words.
“Good.” Dean doesn’t hesitate to climb into bed with Sam. The bed really isn’t meant for two; it’s not at all like the Queen-sized beds in motel rooms they usually get, but there’s enough room for Dean. Even if there weren’t, Sam would make room. “Been here an hour already, just waiting to be able to come in to see you.” He slides an arm around Sam’s shoulders, bending his arm so that he can smooth out Sam’s messy hair. “You look so tired. Bet you didn’t get any sleep last night either.”
As Sam nods empathetically, he finds his head being gently directed to rest on Dean’s upper arm and shoulder. Sam nuzzles into place and closes his eyes; despite the pain he’s in, he’s never been so comfortable in all his life. As the recognizable opening credit theme song of Dr. Sexy M.D. plays on the television, Sam drifts off to sleep.

heehee I can totally see Dean spending an hour trying to sweet-talk the nurses into letting him get back there sooner while Sam stares at the clock just hoping and knowing Dean will be there as soon as he can so Sam can finally relax.
Nice Dr. Sexy reference. :)
:-) Thanks. I couldn't resist. I felt weird mentioning it twice in a very short ficlet, but I like the first reference's wording and the second reference just HAD to happen. So I was stuck with them both. I can live with it though. Glad you made you smile!
