19. An After
Sammy had his appendix out years ago, so Dean knows it’s not that, not this time. But it could be just about anything else. And the bathroom door between him and Sam does nothing to alleviate his worries.
It’d been like any normal evening for them. Dean had been scouring the net for bigfoot references and Sam had been reading a few of the books they’d gotten out of the library. Dean’s stomach had rumbled, so he’d gone out for Chinese take-out, which was now cooling, still in the paper bags, on the motel table. When he’d returned, Sam had been in the bathroom—for how long, Dean didn’t know. All he knew was that there had been a crash and the sound of Sam moving things around and swearing.
The books have been abandoned on the table, but there is no sign that anything had gone wrong while Dean was out. No bigfoot—or anything else for that matter—had broken in and attacked. Sam hadn’t had a vision in years. Dean couldn’t remember what Sam had eaten for lunch, but it was probably another one of his salads. Food poisoning? Salmonella?
Sean knocks on the door. “Sammy? You okay?”
There’s a brief pause before the reply. “Dean, where’s the first aid kit?”
Dean’s reaction is to press both palms flat against the door. His heart races. His breath does as well. Something’s wrong. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” There’s more noise. “Where the hell are the Band-Aids?”
Something’s definitely wrong. “Sammy, seriously, you’re worrying me. Just open the door, and I’ll help you find whatever you need.” He imagines Sam with a gunshot wound or a knife slice, bleeding out on the motel bathroom floor.
But when Sam opens the door, the lock clicking as the knob turns, Sam looks fine. “What is it?” Dean asks, voice full of panic. “Are you all right?”
Sam nods. “Yeah… God, Dean, it’s just a paper cut. No need to overreact. I was just looking for—”
“It’s out here by the bed.” Without difficulty, Dean locates a box of Band-Aids and the small tube of Neosporin. He sits Sam on the bed and wraps a Band-Aid around the man’s finger. “You nearly gave me a heart attack, you know. You should have just told me it was only a paper cut.” He lifts Sam’s hand and kisses the slightly-injured finger.
Sam smiles. “Dean, it’s not your job to protect me every second.”
“Sure it is.”
“Okay, but you can’t keep worrying so much. Save that for the big things.”
“I worry about the little things so I don’t have to worry about the big ones.”
Sam laughs. “And how’s that working out for you?”
Dean shakes his head. He kisses Sam’s finger again. Then his kisses slip down Sam’s hand and continue on up Sam’s long arm, eventually finding Sam’s lips.
