Part 28. A Before

“I’m f-fucking free… zing.”

“Yep,” Dean smirks as he helps a dripping wet, cold, and limping Sam out of the car and into the motel room. “Falling into a Vermont lake in the middle of December will do that to you.”

“I d-d-didn’t f-fah…fall in,” Sam protests, clinging to his brother. His warm, strong brother.

“I know.” Dean had been impressed by the way Sam had jumped in to get the gun back without even thinking about it.

Dean kicks the door closed and surveys the motel room. His first instinct is to tuck Sammy into bed and cover as much of the Sasquatch’s large body with his own as he can. But Sam’s drenched to the bone and his clothes are practically frozen to his body. So Dean steers him around the bed and marches him straight into the bathroom.

Dean runs the shower, pulling the knob all the way out and turning it all the way up to as hot as it gets. Dean liberates the thermometer from their first aid kit and immediately pops it into Sam’s mouth. It’s not going to be an entirely accurate reading, given how much Sammy’s teeth are chattering, but it’ll give him a frame of reference he can work with.

As the shower warms up, Dean sets to work on the difficult task of stripping Sam’s clothes off. He has to use his knife to get the flannel shirt off him because the cuffs seemed stuck to Sam’s wrists permanently. The jeans are especially hard to peel off. The frozen fabric just doesn’t want to bend in the right way. Dean kneels before him, breathing hot on Sam’s legs, trying to get the ice to melt off the denim.

Sam shivers so violently, Dean realizes he can’t wait. He turns down the temperature of the shower a little. With Sam shuffling, they both climb into the shower. Sam’s long arms wrap around Dean, holding him close for warmth even though the warm water is rushing over him.

Hair covers his face. Water runs down his body. But the shivers don’t stop for quite some time. And even when they back down, they strike again every few minutes. Violent shudders that take his whole body and turn him helpless. Dean thinks about trying to get the jeans off Sam now. And he thinks about taking Sam’s temperature again, worried that it might be dropping. But Dean knows the best thing he can do for him now is to just stand there and let Sam squeeze him and hold him and get warm again.

Once Sam has recovered, there will be time to take his temperature. Once Sam doesn’t need the hot water to feel warm, Dean will put him to bed and make sure he stays there; he’ll guard Sam all night if that’s what it takes. And in the morning, he’ll sneak down to the office and help himself to the continental breakfast, bringing Sam hot scrambled eggs, waffles, and a steaming mug of coffee. There will be time later for all of this, time to get Sam to relax, time to get Sam out of these jeans. But for now, Dean’s glad they’re there. Having a layer of fabric between the two of them ensures he’s not going to do anything he shouldn’t. Although… getting Sammy worked up like that might raise his temperature.
