Happy 4th!
Jul. 4th, 2003 09:15 pmThis is actually one of my least favorite holidays... but happy 4th :-) Hope all the Americans out there are having a good day/night/weekend!
I'm very happy to be free, don't get me wrong! And would rather live here than many other countries in the world, but sometimes it's difficult to live in this country with my hatred for capitalism :-)
So, we went out to the Japanese steak house tonight... which is a funny way to celebrate an American holiday, but it worked, I think.
After making a big deal about how I don't like when people make a big deal about my being a vegetarian, he came up with a brilliant idea. I ordered the chicken or whatever, and he ate it, and I got to enjoy the rice and veggies. In fact, he took the shrimp and chicken from my plate and gave me ALL his rice and sprouts! Isn't that nice?! And the cook guy let me pass when he was throwing shrimp... so I didn't even have to have one in my mouth. YAY! So I managed to have fun and a good dinner with our friends, and still not eat meat.
heehee, to keep myself straight on track I actually read a number of reports about what horrible things shrimp farming is doing for the world- environment and people both. The quotes from the third world people almost made me cry as I sat there eating though.
My gods, people in the third world starve and die, and whole habitats are destroyed as are their animals (including good, natural shrimp populations) because of shrimp farming... and here we are spending lots of money to throw these things around and make them do little dances on the stove for entertainment. How much more greedy self-centered American can you get?
We went for ice cream afterwards... which makes me feel bad about my weight again, but it was very good, and I only eat ice cream maybe ten times a year anyway. *sigh* LOL What a downer I'm being! LOL It was a VERY nice night, though, apart from my nearly crying a few times as I watched the meat cook (people making animal sounds as they cook/eat meat is usually my limit)
Looking forward to watching fireworks on TV, being thankful for what I have, and then watching Highlander a little later (and Monk if it's on! I haven't checked schedule yet)

I didn't know shrimp farming caused such problems. But I'd actually never given a second thought to it before just now! I think I assumed someone just fished them out of the sea, naturally, or something - but I guess I should just realise that not much is done naturally these days!

Date: 2003-07-04 11:16 pm (UTC)No, all the meat was very much dead... the cooks just like to have fun with it- part of the show and all that. One such joke at my local place is stand a shrimp up and push its tail back and forth as the chef shouts "Whuzzzzup!" *sigh* Isn't that joke, like, 3 years old? LOL
It was a good dinner though, and the chef was very good- some absolutely amazing knife throwing (and he used the sharp knives- usually they switch them with the dull ones before doing the tricks) and tossing lemons onto forks and catching things in his hat. I don't want to sound like it wasn't a good time, just cuz the food squicked me :-) I'm always very impressed that those chefs can do the same shows over and over again with such high amounts of energy and humor.

Mmmmm ice cream *G* The place we went to I've never been before- it has an old fashioned crank that makes the ice cream- twas very yummy.
Enjoy your air conditioned weekend! :-)
