Honeymooning with an All American Boy
Mar. 24th, 2015 11:10 pmI pre-ordered Steve Grand's All American Boy album on iTunes (with a Christmas gift card I had) and it was just released on Sunday night. Since then, I haven't been able to stop listening. The album's been on repeat at work.
melydia calls this the honeymoon stage, when you're so in love with an album you listen to it over and over and can't get enough. So, yeah. I'm totally there.
I'm not sure why I like it so much. The songs are nothing overly special, though there are some I really love and others that are just okay. Some of the songs have a country overtone, which is not what I usually listen to. And some of the songs are clearly meant for people who love whiskey more than I do. And, yet, I still love this album.
There's just something about this midwestern gay boy that is genuine and honest and attractive to me. Some songs are fun. Some are dark. Some are a little heartbreaking. Some are silly. But they all feel real, like they came from the heart and paint this incredible picture of this time and place and character that's really interesting to get to know through the songs. And his sound is more pop than hardcore country, anyway. It's kind of a little bit of everything. I like that. It just feels authentic and real.
Okay, I have to admit the way he can't stop pressing his face against the other lad's face in Stay is pretty beautiful. (fuckyeahnuzzling) But I didn't even like the song that much until I started listening to the album on repeat, and now I adore it and dance around my office to it at work when no one is around. But All American Boy is definitely still my favorite. However, Soaking Wet is also kind of epic and is the kind of catchy I find myself singing to myself while in the library trying to find books off the missing list. Embarrassing if anyone else actually knew the song. LOL But I do really love his other songs as well, with call-outs to the trans community, to failed relationships, to childhood friends.
I really like it. And I'm in love. Which means I have to tell everyone. So consider yourself told. Then go buy the album and enjoy :-)
