Top Ten: Fandoms I Don’t Fangirl
Aug. 11th, 2015 12:00 pmAt a recent con, someone saw my multi-fandom fangirl badge label and asked me what I fangirl. I find it impossible to answer that question; there are just too many fandoms! Instead, I find it easier to answer the question a friend asked me after a Harry Potter meetup a few months ago: what aren’t you into? Sorry if some (or all) of these are your favorite.
Top Ten Fandoms I Don’t Fangirl
- Game of Thrones- I made it through season 1, but it just didn’t grab me
- The Walking Dead- I’m not into zombies. Or walkers. Or whatever they’re called. Just not my thing.
- Professional sports other than hockey- nothing’s as good as hockey
- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic- They’re not the MLP from my childhood; just haven’t seen this yet
- Horror movies- I’m just not into them
- Bevis & Butt-head- I just don’t understand the appeal. The art and the humor are too rough for me
- Ren & Stimpy- Same thing. Just never liked ‘em. The fact that I didn’t have cable TV/the channel they were on didn’t help
- Spongebob Squarepants- I just don’t get the appeal.
- Pokemon- I know, I know, but I was just too old when it became a thing
- Breaking Bad- the show is just too dirty for me; I kept itching to jump in with some Lysol. And then the bathtub scene happened…

Date: 2015-08-11 05:14 pm (UTC)I love Game of Thrones. So instead in this spot I'd have to put Buffy/Angel. I was obsessed with other things when these were huge, and just never got around to watching them. I've seen a few eps here and there, but that's it. Plus I just don't worship at the altar of Joss Whedon. Firefly was ok, Kaylee is cute, but I didn't love it.
Instead of hockey, put NFL here. Mostly just for the Colts, the Bears, and Peyton Manning. I don't follow football as intensely now as I did in the few years I played fantasy football though.
I do like the new MLP: Friendship is Magic, as its own entity totally
divorced from the original MLP. It's cute and funny and I've seen pretty much every Episode. I guess in its place I would put anything comics, even Marvel outside the movie-verse. I'm just not really a huge comic book person. Except original Rogue, Gambit, and the Phoenix saga. The 90's cartoon did it better than the X-Men movies.
Word on The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. So not interested. Even more word on horror movies. Horror never had anything to do with loving SPN.

Date: 2015-08-11 05:56 pm (UTC)So no SuperWhoLock for me, thanks. superWho, maybe, but it's got to be before the 11th Doctor. I'm years behind on DW and not all that motivated to catch up. Still can't reconcile the 11th Doctor's "Earth Is Defended" speech with Torchwood:Children of Earth or Miracle Day, I guess. Not unless they let my pretend that the Crack in the Wall resetting included Torchwood 3 too. *bitter TW fangirl is still bitter*

Date: 2015-08-11 06:07 pm (UTC)We suggested to John Barrowman this past weekend that the TARDIS just pick Ianto from the past up and drop him off in the present with a little note pinned to his suit because you can't see the TARDIS on the show. John laughed but we could tell he was just humoring us. Apparently Ianto/Gareth is going to be in the next TW audio drama from Big Finish coming out in the fall, though. So I was happy to hear that!
I haven't seen more than 2 episodes of the Twelveth Doctor, so I'm behind there as well.

Date: 2015-08-11 06:12 pm (UTC)I'll definitely have to give the new MLP a try sometime then.
I'm not as into comic fandoms as I could be, but I definitely have a soft spot for them and wish I could instantly have all of the knowledge so I could fangirl (and write fanfic) properly.

Date: 2015-08-11 09:46 pm (UTC)For me, there's very few things I actually get to the level of seeking fic about. Even HP, I rarely read fic for, and I consider myself a HP fangirl. I can't juggle more than a couple "all in" things at once.

Date: 2015-08-12 12:21 am (UTC)I don't watch Breaking Bad or Walking Dead, though Bill likes both. He says I'd probably like BB but that WD is too graphically violent for my taste. I trust his judgment. He knows what kind of horror I like (not much) and what I don't.
Beavis & Butthead and Ren & Stimpy are nothing more than a collection of punchlines to me anymore. I never watched either of them very much, but I can appreciate a good Log or Cornholio reference from time to time. Just part of my pop culture lexicon, like "gonna need a bigger boat" or "never let go, Jack." Not stuff I necessarily love, but I like getting the joke.
Never seen any of the other ones. Bill finds Spongebob absolutely insufferable. Oh, and pro sports. Doesn't hold my attention. I've tried, oh how I've tried, but I just can't seem to force myself to give a damn. But that's okay. I love a lot of things. I don't have to love everything.
BTW, feel free to give up on Fringe. You won't hurt my feelings. :)

Date: 2015-08-12 06:23 am (UTC)I just finished the first season of Breaking Bad today, actually. It's fine and I think I will continue to watch it as well and be a passive viewer of that show, too. I don't care about the violence or gore (in the bathtub episode especially) which is one of the reasons I think I can watch Walking Dead as well.
I don't have premium cable so I haven't seen Game of Thrones. Sometimes I get HBO free for a weekend and my dad DVRs a bunch of episodes but they are not in order when he does it but he doesn't seem to mind which drives me crazy. How can you watch random episodes of a show like that that you know nothing about?
My brother was super into Pokemon but I was too old for it when it was popular. Same with Spongebob which I associate with kids and stoners.
I watched Ren and Stimpy when I was young and visited my grandmother (she had cable and my family didn't) I think I watched it just to piss off my parents, though. I have a Powdered Toast Man magnet on my fridge from a Ren and Stimpy birthday card I got once. I think Bevis and Butthead was too adult for me when it was popular (and also on cable) but I had friends who were super into it.
I love hockey but my first love is baseball! I grew up with baseball and football so those were my first loves. Then hockey came to town...I think I really started following hockey 15 or so years ago.

Date: 2015-08-12 10:02 am (UTC)A couple of my friends and I were at the ill-fated Torchsong con some years back. John was supposed to sing a concert for us, but he broke his foot and couldn't travel so he video conferenced the con from his home. I did eventually get personalized autographs from him, but they had to go to Wales and back via the con organizers first.
