Book sale time! Now that I have a special LiveJournal just for books, I'm putting my book sale purchase lists there so save y'all from slogging through it if you don't want to:
http://katekintailbc.livejournal.com/tag/book+sale
I'm THRILLED with a few of my purchases. A hardcover Doctor Who book, a few Harry Potter books I didn't have, a Lord of the Rings Bestiary, a ton of graphic novels (including the new Dean Koontz one I almost just bought off Amazon), and a whole boxed set of A.A.Milne books. Some nice audio books (including my favorite David Sedaris book and a Stephen King book I had on my wish list) as well. One more book sale tomorrow (I get to sleep in a little before going to sit in line for an hour or more before it opens).

NaNoWriMo isn't going so well. I'm just a little behind and the story hasn't been cooperating. Today I jumped ahead and, oh look, a character just came down with a cold. Imagine that! *blush* Hey, it's a crutch but it's actually kind of related to the plot, so it's not that bad :-)

Pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty)

Totally my favorite book read this year so far and it'll be a hard one to top.

And the list of all the books I finished in 2007

Books read )

I didn't count books I re-read. And the total is 128. Seriously awesome since I set a goal of 50 for the year :-)
tarotgal: (Ewan- Good Book)
So I finished listening to what has quickly become my new favorite book: Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon

I liked the first Lord John book a lot, but this? This pushed soooooo many of my buttons. There were multiple appearances by Jamie (OMG I want to kick his arse for being such a bastard to John, though!), there was plenty of period goodness, there were battles & action, there was hurt/comfort galore, there was mystery and family honor, and for a little while there was a fantastic gay romance with a bit of action as well *EG* I seriously loved every moment, and thought it was beautifully written.

Oh, and I had to share my very most favoritest part: The beginning of chapter 21 in which Lord John... well, I won't spoil it! (MP3) Guuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I want to write more, but I don't want to spoil it for anybody. Suffice it to say, it was wonderful in so many ways and treated the subject matter beautifully but there was a great balance of things, too.

Incidentally, I still haven't read A Breath of Snow and Ashes- and now I desperately want to. But I'm re-reading the series and I'm only up to halfway through Dragonfly, so I have a ways to go. Hopefully I'll be less miffed at Jamie by then. LOL

Books!

tarotgal: (OC- Ryan- Whoever)
I went to a new book sale today. Don't know if I'll go again, but it was nice to learn where the library was and I got a few books I'm very happy with:
http://kintailscape.com/BC/booksaledec07.html

On another note... I am SO behind on holiday shopping and I haven't even started giftfics yet. OMG *freaks out* I plan to get back to everyone tonight about writing things in return for me.

I went to a birthday party last night and had a LOT of fun. I was meeting my friend who I went to the FarieCon with's friends for the first time- they're all really sweet and even more fandom-obsessed than I am (which is REALLY saying something). And what's even more impressive, they all had not only heard of the 10th Kingdom but had been made to watch it and fell in love with it. I mean, not even my flist likes my favorite miniseries ever! I was floored and very happy. And one of the two gay boys was most supportive of my writing slash so, hey, that's good *EG*

Virginia Tech is going to the Orange Bowl!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!

Anyone else going to watch Tin Man? I think it looks fantastic. I'm eager to watch it.

And... the most important news of all:
TORCHWOOD FINALE TONIGHT! OMG OMG OMG CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also can't wait for it to come out on DVD. I'm SO buying that the day it hits stores.

That's 68 books for only $45.50
A who bunch of gorgeous graphic novels (I'm definitely on a GN kick right now), a lot of really nice audio books, some gorgeous hardcovers to add to my collection, a few books I love so much that I want to pick them up and hug them tight, and even some nice selections for BookCrossing with! I actually gave the library $46 and told them I didn't need change. So that comes out to about 67 cents a book so far. REALLY not bad for a first day. I'm THRILLED with some of these finds (and ODing on Tolkien & Batman)! Squee!

Tomorrow will be book sale #2 day 1, and book sale #1 day 2 :-) Oh, and before I forget, the Halloween party was lots of fun. MUCH smaller than I'd been led to believe, but still a great time :-)

Book Sale

I went to a thrift shop today. Had some trouble finding it (um, because I thought I knew where it was in downtown Fairfax and I apparently did NOT have a clue and I didn't bother looking at the directions). They have a "fill a brown paper bag for $5 sale every month and August's was today.

I filled two bags full of books- about 10 of which I'm keeping for myself. The rest I'm BookCrossing with. And I was so happy yesterday when I got through half of my "needs to be registered" box! Now I have about 110 books still to register. Crap! LOL They're good books, though. I'm happy about it. Nothing terribly spectacular. Definitely worth going. I got several nice hardcovers, a Golden Book about Eeyore, a dozen classic children's stories, an audio book, a Charmed novel, two Tolkien role play books, and a whole BUNCH of paperback novels. I'm not going to list them all out, though, because I'm nicer than that. LOL

They came out to $0.12 each, though. NOT bad at all if I do say so myself.

***NO SPOILERS!***

I just finished reading, less than 24 hours after getting the book in my hand. It took me about 15.5 hours to read in total (I only got 3 hours of sleep last night, and those were hours I forced myself to take).

Wow. I honestly couldn't have asked for anything more.

There were times when I cried my eyes out. There were times when I was struck silent, heart pounding. There were times I JUMPED off my couch, hopped up and down, pounding my fist at the air in happiness (because I had to be quiet as my house full of relatives is alseep).

I think I'll go to bed and take some more time to let everything sink in. Just wanted to post and say I'd read it and I'll be going back on mail & mailing lists but not until sometime tomorrow after I've spent time thinking more about it. So if you sent me e-mail/posted, I probably won't reply until Sun night or Monday night when all my family is gone.

Please remember to post NO SPOILERS in reply to anything on my journal since not all my friends have read it!!!
If you haven't read the book, don't even think to look at my journal/replies just in case someone is mean and posts spoilers. But PLEASE don't :-)

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] x_posed_again

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5.Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
6. Tag five people.

From Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (my current read, though I'm only on page 202):
But she heard the name and shivered.
'Look at the sky,' she said quickly. The sky had grown darker. 'I think it will thunder again. Here is the new rain, look!'
She closed her eyes and let the rain fall on her face, and after another second I could not have said what were raindrops, and what tears. I went to her and touched her arm.

I'm not tagging anyone. Anybody can join in on the fun.

OMG I wish I had more bookshelves... I'm drowning... HAPPY, but drowning. I got there an hour early. It was raining, so I was able to sit under the overhang against the building as the SECOND person in line *facepalm* I also got some reading done while I waited, so yay.
One of my friends from the Writers' Roundtable showed up about ten minutes before the doors opened, so it was nice seeing her... I think she thinks I'm a freak now... but I saw her buy a whole bag so heehee. Bag sales rule.

  • A Thief of Time by Tony Hillerman (Audio book)

  • Nimisha's Ship by Anne McCaffrey (Unopened Audio book)

  • Crade and All by James Patterson (Audio book)

That's 104 for $15.
So in three days my total is a whopping: 184 for $117.50. That comes out to $0.64 apiece. That rocks. *is so happy*

Halfway through typing this up, my vision went away on one side. Freaked me out. I think I was tired/dehydrated or something. Vision is back, but I was terrified for a good half an hour or so. Crap.

  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (Oversized paperback, but the original edition with illustrations and large type to match my set!)

  • The Hobbit by JRRT (Audio book- the set of 6 dramatized cassettes that my parents have... only this comes in a lovely wooden collector's box!)

  • The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (Oversized paperback. SQUEE! I LOVED this book when I got it out of the library. Now I have my very own copy!)

  • Gravitation Vol 1 by Murakami (Manga. SQUEEEEEE! I rescued this from the kids section- NOT something little kids need to read. But something I sure as heck wanted- was going to buy the whole series from Amazon... getting it for fifty cents is even better!)

  • Gravitation Vol 2 by Marakami (Manga. More SQUEEEEEEEEEE! Perfect condition, too. Wowzers)

So... that was $78. Which seems like a lot, but for 54 books, many of which are audio books, several of which were hardcovers, and a few of which I was probably going to buy at full price off Amazon.com (The Historian, Gravi, Holidays, and Dinatopia... which would have run me about $75 just for those 5 if you're going by cover price) I feel like I had a spectacular morning of book-buying! *does the math* $0.69 a book? On the first day? That's actually fantastic.

Plus some are gifts, many are for BookCrossing, and so many of the audio books I'll be listening to and then BookCrossing with anyway. So lots of these won't be staying on my overwhelmed shelves for long.

That's 60 books for a total of $6. (10 cents apiece)

And my three day total is... 124 for $89.50. Not too bad really. Seventy-something cents each isn't excellent, but considering I got a lot of nonfiction, hardcovers and audiobooks (not to mention several really nice books for my BookCrossing buddy) I'm happy with it. And certainly I'm going to be spending a LONG time registering these on BookCrossing. LOL

All righty. I'm off to Blockbuster (bye bye History Boys and Farscape Season 1 Volume 7) then when I get home, I start work on a Remus-the-Rentboy fic and watch another game of hockey. Oh, and we're doing another blood curve for diabetic cat. Fun stuff!

I'm going again tomorrow during their big fill-a-bag sale though I don't anticipate a lot of good books will be left by then. *shrug*
