Gay Marriages...
Jul. 31st, 2003 07:06 amOK... it's certainly no surprise that I'm not a huge fan of the current US president's opinions. I'm not attacking the guy- I don't know him personally or anything. His political views just don't mesh with my own. On almost every conceivable level.
So I just had to share from a recent cnn article about his stand on gay marriages: http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/07/30/bush.gay.marriage/index.html
"I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, and I think we ought to codify that one way or another," Bush told reporters at a White House news conference. "And we've got lawyers looking at the best way to do that."
What? Last I checked, the best way to do that is to get a man and a woman together and have them sign a marriage license. Last I checked, that's already part of a number of laws.
As for what he believes... can't SOMEONE teach him how to word things better? I believe in the Loch Ness Monster, that doesn't mean it's real. Perhaps the phrase "should be" should have been in that sentence of his? *shakes head* Because honestly, Mr.President, PLENTY of marriages DO exist between gay people. Just because you don't believe they exist doesn't mean they don't *sigh*
OK, I'm making fun. But only because I'm miffed at this whole thing. Why can't people just get along? Why all the hatred and yelling? Really, seriously, what does it hurt people if two gay men or two gay women get married? Is more love, legalized, fair, safe love REALLY going to tear our nation apart MORE than this debating and yelling and mudslinging about rights and lifestyles and equality is right now?

Ugh!!
Date: 2003-07-31 12:50 pm (UTC)Anyway... it is like you said- tarotgirl, the Vast majority of states have codified laws pertaining to homosexual marriage- and by making a national law to ban homosexual marriages won't (in my opinion) make marriages any more valid. In order for that to happen people need to take marriage more seriously and really think about commitment. My personal belief is that a homosexual can do this Just as well as a hetrosexual person.
Anyway... I'll get off my little soapbox now *chuckles* I agree with you about this being frustrating

Date: 2003-07-31 08:24 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, I feel like that more than sometimes *sigh* I do have problems with democrats as well... but at least I see eye-to-eye with them a little better on most issues. But not enough to make me vote democrat (or republican) in the last election :-)
And yep... exactly... ug. It's like one step forward, two back these days. One state approves the marraiges (or at least can't rule out sodomy) and the pres fights for stricter standards on marriage and adoption *sigh* There are sooooo many problems in this world... it's astounding that this is what they find to put the effort into to fighting about right now.

Date: 2003-08-01 06:01 am (UTC)The pope's rulings, too. I'm not as bothered by that, because they have every right to interpret their religion the way they like. And I'm not a fan of that particular religion. But I know quite a few gay couples who adopted and have VERY loving and happy lives and ARG! I really can't understand why anyone who believes in morality and a supposedly "loving god" would want to decrease the love in this world *sigh*
But yeah, I completely agree with you. Why do they have the right? And even so, why does it hurt them? *sigh*
