Faerie Tale Theatre is coming out on DVD as a full set (instead of just individual disks)!!! This was one of my absolute favorite shows as a child (did I mention I was raised on PBS?) OMG but I've been DYING for this to come out on DVD! Now all I need are Pound Puppies, Zoobilee Zoo, and Square One and my geeky childhood will be completely re-lived *giggle* But I'm soooooo happy! Is a little expensive... but so worth it. And several different set formats to choose from. Oohhh!

Date: 2004-11-17 01:15 am (UTC)Pound puppies was my very first fandom obsession, I think. No, I'm sure of it. And Zoobilee Zoo was very special to me, as well.
but I've never heard of this series, or Square One, for that matter.
Both were on PBS.
Faerie Tale Theater was basically one fairy tale after another- most of which were the ones that don't get a lot of attention but ones I loved (like the Snow Queen). From what I recall- as a child- production values were fantastic (at least for those times), and the acting was great. Not to mention that they told the stories pretty much as they were supposed to be told, not the really pretty, fluffy versions. My family watched every week. We donated to our non-regular PBS station specifically because it was the one that showed it. *sigh* Good series.
As for Square One... that was math. Lots of math. And cuteness. Little cartoon skits about number munchers. Skits parodying Brittish sitcoms but throwing math into the plot. Song numbers from special guests and the regulars (who all sung) about magical mathematical things like the 9 multiplication table or probability. *resists urge to break into song immediately* Sometimes I see the actors from the show today and get all squeey :-) And my favorite- mathnet. Like dragnet, only with math. A week-long mystery (like 3-2-1- contact's bloodhound gang, if you watched that) that was engaging and clever and funny. They did a 10 Little Indians thing that was cracked because of measuring and figuring out room sizes (and secret hidden passages). And my favorite episode was all about the Fibanacci sequence (there was this adorable parrot who kept calling out 1 1 2 3 5 Eureka!) Okay, yeah, I'm a geek, but I learned SO much and haven't been that entertained in a long while. And I would LOVE to have it to show kids I tutor/teach or my own kids one day. It was f-ing genius!
There really was SO much out there! Whatever happened to Saturday morning cartoons? *sniffles* They were the only ones I was allowed to watch because I could only watch educational programming for an hour or two every day during the week. (I missed a lot of He-Man and She-Ra, sadly. Though I always got to watch them when over at friends' houses!) But, yeah, I miss those times. And the marketing execs know it. With all the old series out on DVD now... and things like Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony and Care Bears making a comeback. They figure we're starting to have kids of our own (or at least having flashbacks because of reunions and all). I don't fit in either category but I adore the comeback. Even if it'll make me poor!

Date: 2004-11-17 12:26 pm (UTC)The other show on PBS I used to love even more than that was Where in the World is Carmen San Diego. This was probably because I like geography and history more than math. They had the regular show for a while and then they had Where in Time is Carmen San Diego, then the cartoon show after that. I always wanted to go on those shows, not only because I thought the host was cute, I also really wanted the letterman jacket the winner got at the end. Yeah, I'm pathetic.
