So I had a great write-in tonight for NaNoWriMo.
melydia and I got very little writing done but I had a BLAST and really needed that. At the end of the night, though, I got to the end of a Sin story (much of the middle is unwritten still) and suddenly something happened that totally blew my mind. It was completely unexpected and wonderful and I'm SO excited about it... but I can't say what it is because this story takes place in the distant future and there are tongs of stories in-between you'd have to read for it to make sense. Ugh. I'm so behind. One step forward and two steps back.
Now I'm watching more Hornblower. "I have shared a berth with Lieutenant Bush, Major CĂ´tard, and I considered it an honor." HOW had I forgotten that line existed? Squee!!!!
I know, I know. None of you who requested Hornblower fics wanted slash, and I'm writing gen, I promise (I'm being good). But, OMG, that line makes me all kinds of happy.

(And by the way, if that line inspired a slashy plot bunny to bite you, you can go write it before you go write my gen fic. I wouldn't mind; any Hornblower fic, especially sneezefic, is welcome.)

Date: 2010-11-12 02:31 am (UTC)I earread all of the Hornblower books. And, oh, how exciting it was to get to the "And then he sneezed three times running," line in that one. SQUEE! I loved the moment following where he feels like he has the worst cold of his life and he's sitting in the rain on the boat choosing to sniffle rather than "disturb the arrangement" of his cloak and hat. So nummy. I think I've listened to that bit maybe 20 times.
As for my favorite book... I cannot remember for sure but I think it's Flying Colours: http://just-the-things.livejournal.com/28669.html
I agree with you about the treasure hunt though: http://just-the-things.livejournal.com/19604.html

Date: 2010-11-12 04:50 am (UTC)Pray tell, would that be the Ioan Gruffudd audio version? If so, two questions.
a) Does he say the infamous line?
b) When Horatio's sick, does he talk in a sort of congested voice?
I ask because I really want to listen to Ioan's version, but I don't want to go into it unprepared.
(Also, were you disappointed that Horatio's cold seemed to vanish after like, one chapter? I always felt like there was so much more to explore there. But maybe that's just the fetish talking...)

Date: 2010-11-12 05:51 am (UTC)No, the version I earread was from my library. Don't remember the reader, but I could look it up Saturday when I'm volunteering at the library. And, no, no stuffy voice when it came to the dialogue. He made the symptoms sound quite miserable during that bit, but no reproducing them in his voice.
Oh, it wasn't even just one chapter either! He sneezes three times running (goodness gracious, I will never get tired of that line, will I?) as the last line of Chapter 5 and then at the beginning of 6 he's ill and heading to meet the important people at the ambassador's club. In the audio version, he's sick for a total of, I don't know, 2 minutes. It's mentioned one more time when he's on the move. And then, poof, magically disappears.
Maybe that says a lot more about Hornblower, though. He's so introspective and critical of himself when he has the time. But when it comes to the formalities and his duty, he doesn't care at all about himself. And since it's third person personal, it makes sense that the gravity of the situation eclipses his illness. But, damn, it's described as SO bad. He can barely stand and then, suddenly, it's gone a minute later. *sad*
Okay, now, where can I find this Ioan audio? *needs*

Date: 2010-11-12 06:48 am (UTC)This is how pathetic I am; When I got the tape, I had to have someone preview it for me. According to my informant, he tragically doesn't say the line, and she stopped before the bit where he's sick, so I don't know if it even comes up at all. So while it's worth getting for Ioan, it's missing the best part.
You have a good point about Horatio working through illness, but still, it's disappointing. I guess it's up to us to fill in the gaps *Grin*.
